Burn, Baby, Burn: How to Get the Most Out of Your Candles
We’ve all been there — you light a candle, get comfy on the couch, and before you know it, your candle’s got a tunnel deeper than your inbox on a Monday morning. Don’t worry — with a few simple tricks, you can make sure your candles burn beautifully every time.
1. First Burn = Best Burn
The first time you light your candle, let it burn long enough for the melted wax to reach the edges of the container. This helps prevent tunneling and ensures an even burn moving forward. Think of it as teaching your candle good habits from the start.
2. Trim That Wick
Before each burn, trim your wick to about ¼ inch. Long wicks = big flames, soot, and faster melting. Keeping your wick short keeps things clean and controlled.
3. Location, Location, Location
Drafty spots are the enemy of an even burn. Avoid placing your candle near open windows, vents, or fans. An uneven flame can cause tunneling and reduce your candle’s lifespan.
4. Don’t Burn Too Long
It’s tempting to keep your candle going for hours, but burning it for more than 4 hours at a time can lead to excess soot and an overheated container. Give your candle a break — and yourself an excuse to light it again later!
5. Cover Up
When not in use, cover your candle to keep dust and debris from settling on the wax. This keeps your candle looking fresh and burning clean.
6. Know When to Say Goodbye
When your candle’s wax is about ½ inch from the bottom, it’s time to retire it. Burning past this point can overheat the container and damage surfaces. Time for a new scent — lucky you!
Bonus Tip: Reuse the Jar!
Once your candle’s finished, repurpose the jar for storage, planters, or even your next DIY project. Sustainability never smelled so good!
With these simple tips, you’ll keep your candles burning longer, cleaner, and brighter. After all, life’s too short for messy melts and wasted wax.
